Understanding Headaches and Migraines
Headaches and migraines come in many forms. Triggers might be alcohol consumption, dehydration, chocolate, scents, and other factors. Still, most of you who suffer from Headaches and Migraines will also have some underlying neck problems contributing to your discomfort.
Headaches and migraines are often caused by spasms of the arteries in the scalp or at the base of the neck. Depending on where this occurs, it can cause a range of symptoms.
However, stress is a significant factor in most headaches. When stressed, your neck muscles can tense up for prolonged periods. At the same time, these muscles support your head all day, and that puts extra work into these muscles, which makes them irritated and stiff. This irritation and other triggers can start a headache or migraine. This is why many headache and migraine sufferers experience symptoms later in the day.
How Sports Therapy Helps
As sports therapists, we can help you manage and alleviate headaches and migraines by examining several factors contributing to your condition. We’ll analyse your alignment, posture, neck, upper back, and shoulder muscle strength. Additionally, we assess the joint movement in your neck and other related areas.
If we find any limitations in movement or strength in your neck or upper back, we’ll address these issues to restore your normal mobility. Improving mobility also increases blood flow in the area, reducing the likelihood of spasms. We’ll also train you in exercises and techniques to prevent future headaches and migraines.
By focusing on these aspects, we aim to provide you with long-term relief and a better understanding of managing your condition.
With our help, you can reduce the frequency and severity of your headaches and migraines, improving your overall quality of life. Message Us today to discover how Tonosis Sports Therapy services can help you achieve a healthier, more comfortable life!
Understand your Neck Pain
Neck pain can come from various sources, affecting how your neck feels and functions. Your neck needs proper alignment, strong surrounding muscles for stability, and a good range of movement to work correctly. The cervical spine, the part of your spine located in your neck, supports your head, which weighs around 10-12 pounds or 4.5-5.5 kilograms. This significant weight makes your neck quite susceptible to strain and injury.
Poor posture, like sitting at a computer for long periods, can lead to misalignments, muscle weaknesses, imbalances, and instability. These issues can disturb the structures in your neck, including muscles, ligaments, and joints. Over time, these disturbances can cause pain and discomfort. They might even lead to more severe problems, such as nerve compression. This compression can result in symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to severe pain, numbness, or even loss of function in the affected areas.
Understanding these factors can help you address and prevent neck pain effectively. Maintaining good posture, ensuring proper alignment, and strengthening your neck muscles are vital strategies to keep your neck healthy and pain-free.
How Sports Therapy Helps
As Sports therapists, we will comprehensively evaluate your neck, assessing your range of motion, strength, posture, and alignment. Painful areas may not always be the source of the problem. Limited movement in areas above or below the pain point often causes excessive pressure or dysfunction.
Using gentle hands-on therapy and targeted exercises, we can alleviate your neck pain, restore your motion, and quickly return you to your daily activities pain-free.
Our approach integrates pain management and sports therapy to ensure comprehensive care. We aim to work with you to reduce neck pain and improve overall posture quickly.

Forward head syndrome
Forward head syndrome is a common condition in today’s modern life. It occurs when your head juts out in front of its natural position over the cervical spine, shortening your neck. This can be influenced by factors like your work habits, age, arthritis, and genetics.
The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) defines forward head posture (FHP) as holding the head forward, out of alignment with the cervical spine. This posture strains the muscles and bones of the neck, often leading to muscle imbalances.
The weight of the head increases as it leans forward, putting more pressure on the spine. The head weighs about 10–14 pounds in a neutral position, but this increases significantly with FHP.
FHP can cause rounded shoulders and upper back, affecting the movement patterns of the scapula (shoulder blade) and humerus (upper arm bone), resulting in scapular dysfunction. If you also experience rounded shoulders, this is called upper crossed syndrome.
Forward head syndrome can impact your breathing as it can cause the upper chest to expand while the lower chest contracts, interfering with normal breathing patterns. FHP can also affect your balance, as some studies have found.
Everyday habits like prolonged sitting, poor posture at work, using computers, and stooping while watching TV can contribute to changes in your spine over time. Activities that cause you to lean forward for long periods, such as using electronic devices, slouching, sleeping with your head raised, carrying heavy bags, and driving with poor posture, can lead to chronic FHP.
Over time, these habits can decrease the natural curve in your neck, shorten the length of your spine, and weaken the neck muscles. This can result in symptoms like neck pain, headaches, and nerve impingement that radiates pain into your upper extremities.
How Sports Therapy Helps
Sports therapy can significantly improve your posture and help correct forward head syndrome. Sports Therapists use various techniques, including hands-on therapy, stretching, specialised exercises, and postural retraining, to enhance your posture, alignment, and neck strength.
We’ll guide you on proper postural positioning and teach you techniques to adapt your work and home environments to reduce strain on your neck.
By making these changes, you can alleviate symptoms and prevent further issues.
